About Reiki

In the late 1800's, through the study of Taoist Qigong, Tendai and Shinto Buddhism and Chinese Oriental Medicine, Dr Mikao Usui of Japan developed the system of working with energy we know as Reiki. The main focus of this system was to help people realise their spiritual potential, to find peace and harmony within themselves. Since Usui's death, on 9 March 1926, Reiki has spread to the West through his student, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi and Mrs Hawayo Takata.

Today, in its many forms, Reiki is used as a therapeutic touch therapy. During a treatment Reiki energy is channelled through the practitioner to the recipient. It accelerates healing on all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual, supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Reiki has undergone many changes since the time of Mikao Usui, but the simplicity of this system remains constant. The ability to channel frequencies of energy is given to the initiate in the form of attunements. There are attunements for each of the three main levels of Reiki. This is what makes Reiki different from other energy systems; once you have received an attunement the ability to channel energy is instantaneous.

There has been great interest in researching Mikao Usui's life and the origins of Reiki. This gives us a much broader picture of the diverse uses of this energy system.
